Our dental services include teeth cleaning and polishing, tooth extractions and
minor oral surgery. Your pet's dental health is just as important to their overall
health as your dental health is to your general health. Dental care is one of the
most commonly overlooked areas of pet health care. A recent report states that over
70% of pets show signs or oral disease by age three. Dental disease affects more
than just your pet's mouth, it can lead to more serious health problems such as
heart, kidney, and lung disease. Bad breath is not something that should be ignored,
it could be indicative of an oral problem.
Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissue surrounding the teeth. Plaque,
a bacterial film attaches to the teeth. As the bacteria dies it becomes a hard substance
called tartar. The early stages of plaque accumulation can be removed by brushing
or using dental treats but as the plaque hardens it can lead to gingivitis. Gingivitis
causes the gums to become swollen and bleed easily. If left unmanaged, the plaque
and tartar can cause infection around the root, tissue damage around the root, and
pain. Having a professional dental cleaning for your pet can prevent all of this.
Our staff can perform an oral exam to look for plaque and tartar, periodontal disease,
and oral tumors. Dental cleanings are performed under general anesthesia. We recommend
a pre-anesthetic exam and depending on your pet's age and physical condition blood
work and x-rays may be necessary to minimize your pet's anesthetic risk. During
anesthesia, your pet's heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiration,
and body temperature will be monitored. .
The dental cleaning consists of scaling and polishing your pet's teeth, applying
a fluoride treatment to help strengthen the teeth, and if needed extract any teeth
that are loose or fractured. .
